In summer the sun is high in the sky, but winter sees the sun drop lower.  Having a northerly aspect allows the maximum amount of sunshine into the home during winter, allowing nature to provide its free warmth.

The northerly aspect allows the home to be kept cool during summer and warm during winter and reduces power cosumption, normally used for heating and cooling.
